March 2001

Thanks to Lions Bernie Rohling and Tom Fiecke for the wonderful meals they cooked at our February 1st and 15th meetings.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, March 1st at our regular meeting place.  Lion Mike Main has volunteered to cook the meal that night which will be at 7:00 P.M.  Our business meeting will follow at approximately 7:30 P.M.

Our second meeting will take place on Thursday, March 15th also at our regular meeting place.  There will be a Board of Directors’ meeting that night at 6:30 P.M..  The business meeting will be at 7:00 P.M.  No one has volunteered to cook for this meeting.  If interested in cooking the meal, please let Lion Steve know at least a week in advance.  (If there is a meal that night, it will be at 7:00 P.M. with the business meeting to follow.)

Thanks to Lion Vern Lemke and his crew for doing a super job at running the radar run on Howard Lake on Saturday, February 17th.  Also, thanks to HL Fire Dept. for their help.  Also, any H.L. Lion members that took any pictures of the radar run or any previous functions or events should turn them in (after developing) to Lion Steve Weber ASAP.

Donations were made to HLWW School for the author and composer Douglas Wood, a trike for a child with cerebral palsy and to the HL Fire Dept. towards the purchase of four complete sets of new uniforms.

Our bowling party at the Park Tavern Lounge & Lanes will be on Saturday, March 10th from 2:00 until 5:00 P.M.  SW Bus Company from Willmar will be our mode of transportation.  We will be leaving HL (behind Gerry’s Super Valu) at 12:45 P.M.  From the Park Tavern, we will be going to Mystic Lake Resort & Casino for supper and other activities.  We will be returning back to HL at approximately 11:00 P.M. (maybe later).  If you are still interested in going, you can sign up by attending one of our meetings in February or the first meeting in March.  Another way is to call Lion Steve Weber @ 543-3567 (H) or 543-3471 (W) or Lion Dan Judd.   Sign up will be on a first come-first serve basis.  We are allowed to bring up to sixty people.  The cost of the bus ride will be $8.00 per person (minimum) for one bus or $12 per person (minimum) for two buses.  Spouses/significant others and friends are also invited to come along.  The deadline for signing up is March 3rdst  (this might be extended).  Hope to see you all there.  Also, at our February 15th meeting, it was decided to extend an invitation to HLFD to our bowling party.  (As of our latest count, there are still plenty of openings.  You still have time to sign up.)

Our club will once again be selling bicycle helmets at a booth at the H.L. Expo on Saturday, March 24th from 9:30 A.M. until 2:00 P.M.  Lion Peggy Borders will be the chairperson for the helmets.  Any member or members willing to help that day will be appreciated.

The Howard Lake Lioness will be sponsoring a pancake breakfast at the Howard Lake Legion on Sunday, April 8th (Palm Sunday).  The hours for this event will forthcoming in next month’s newsletter.  Help from our Lions club will be greatly appreciated.

A benefit turkey dinner for Brett Relander will be held on Sunday, March 25th at the Howard Lake Legion (look in the HL Herald for the hours).  We will be cooking the turkeys with Lion Renee Lahr being the chairperson for this event.  We will need help from as many of our Lions club as possible.  Also, there was a bowl-a-thon for Brett on Sunday, February 11th at the Lake Bowl in Howard Lake.  Lions Peggy Borders, Catherine Brezina, and Steve Weber participated in this event.  Thanks to three members who donated their time and effort.

The Howard Lake Lions will once again be holding their annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 14th at Memorial Park in Howard Lake.  Festivities will begin at 10:00 A.M.  Lion Dan Oestreich will once again be in charge.  Any help on that day will be very much appreciated.
