October  2000

Thanks to Lions Bernie Rohling, Dan and Erin Judd for cooking and serving an excellent meal at our September 7th meeting.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, October 5th at our regular meeting place.  Social hour is at 6:30 P.M.  There will be a meal at 7:00 P.M. on this night.  The meal will be cook and served by Lion Darrell Main.  Following the meal, we will have our regular business meeting.

Our second meeting will take place on Thursday, October 19th at our regular meeting place.  A Board of Directors meeting will take place at 6:30 P.M.   There will also be a meal at 7:00 P.M.  on this night.  The meal will be cooked and served by Lion Chris Bickmann.   Our business meeting will follow the meal.

The Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota will be held their 7th Annual Heel and Wheel at Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton on Sunday, September 10th.  Our club this year took 1st place with the most Lions members participating.   For our efforts, we will be receiving a travelling trophy.  In addition to the trophy, our club won a free bowling party at the Park Tavern Lounge & Lanes in St. Louis Park.  We will use this party for our annual bowling outing this winter.  More details about this will be forthcoming in a future newsletter.

Donations this past month were made to the Winsted Karate Club and the Hearing and Service Dogs.

At our board meeting in July, it was decided that a Howard Lake Lions expense receipt be used when charging any supplies to our Lions Club.  Lion Treasurer Terry Thorson handed these slips out to all that attended the last meeting.  These slips need to be filled out along with the store receipt.  If you need these slips, please contact Lion Terry Thorson.

If you are one of those members who still have not paid your membership dues ($40), please do so ASAP.  You can pay them either by attending one of our upcoming meetings or mail them to P.O. Box 13; Howard Lake, MN  55349.

Thanks to Lions Darrell Main, Chris Bickmann, and Steve Weber for handing out information sheets about our Quest Program at the Open House at HL Elementary on August 30th.

Our Lions club has decided to sign up for the Adopt-a-Highway program for two more years.  We have a one-mile stretch west of Howard Lake on Highway 12 to clean up.  This needs to be done twice a year.  Our next clean-up date will be on Sunday, October 1st.  Those members interested in helping should meet in front of the door of our meeting place at 9:00 A.M.  Thanks to Lion Charles Engels for being the chair of this function.

Our next zone meeting will be on Monday, October 9th at the KC Hall in Waverly.  The social hour begins at 6:30 P.M.  If interested in attending, please let Lions LaNette Thorson or Dan Judd know by no later than Oct. 4th (our next meeting).

The Howard Lake Lioness will be observing their 20th year as a club with a celebration on Saturday, October 21st.  The celebration will be taking place at our meeting place.   Social hour begins at 6:30 P.M. with the meal at 7:30 P.M. Our club has volunteered to help with the meal  that night.  Members on the meal committee include Lions Bernie Rohling, Tim Oberpriller, Joyce Thorson, and Renee Lahr.  All our membership is invited to attend that night.  Let’s give the H.L. Lioness our support by attending in large numbers that night.

THERE WILL BE A SURPRISE 60TH BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR LION MARDELL LEMKE ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14TH AT THE VERN LEMKE RESIDENCE (909 8TH AVENUE SOUTH).  THE PARTY BEGINS AT 4:00 P.M. (NO BLABBING!)
