January 2003

THANK YOU
Thank you to the following H.L. Lions who helped Lion Steve Weber (5M-7 Gram Editor) with the labeling, sorting, and bundling of the September issue of the 5M-7 Gram on December 2nd: Cathy Rufer, Susan Grangroth, and Linda Amman.  Also, thanks to the HLWW FFA for helping out.   It was very much appreciated.

Also, a big thank you to Lions Cathy, Susan, and Linda and other Lions for cleaning and decorating our meeting place for the zone meeting and our Governor’s Night/Christmas party.  They also were able to put up the curtains.  A job well done.

At the zone meeting held on December 2nd, there were approximately sixty Lion members from our zone who were in attendance.  Of those sixty, twenty-four were from our own club.  Thanks to all the members who attended.  Among the cabinet members in attendance that night were DG Gary Johnson, VDG Kevin Schuldt, PDG Ken Sties, PDG & PID John Edling, Region Chair Mike Main, Zone Chairman Terry Thorson, and PDG Darrell Main.

Thanks to Lion Vern Lemke and his crew on the superb job they did at the Bingo fundraiser on December 15th.  Also, thanks to Lion Bernie Rohling on the super job of being the “caller.”

DONATIONS
The Howard Lake Lions made donations to the following:  (1) the Teen Center; (2) the Howard Lake Junior Bowlers  (to cover their sanction fees); and (3) the Wright County Food Shelf.

Our club also made their annual donation to the Parade of Green.  Donations were made to:
(1) Children’s Eye Clinic; (2) Camp New Hope; (3) 5M-7 Wellness Van;  (4) 5M Hearing Foundation; (5) Camp Friendship; (6) Leader Dog for the Blind; (7) Camp Needle Point; and
(8) the MAC Center.

OTHER CLUB NEWS & EVENTS
We are considering sponsoring a pancake breakfast on Palm Sunday (April 13) that the Lioness used to host.  More details in future newsletters.

The Easter Egg Hunt will take place on April 19th.  Lion Duane Hass will be the chairperson.

Our playground equipment at Lions Park needs repair. This is something that we should think about as spring weather arrives.  We could be ready to replace the rope, rocks, and give it a new paint job.
Lions Vern Lemke and Terry Thorson are currently cleaning the closet at our meeting place.  They stated that they would like to put shelves in the closet.  The club gave them the OK to purchase the material for the shelves.

Our Lions club has decided to have a meat raffle every Saturday starting on Jan. 4th from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. at the liquor store in HL.  Lion Tim Oberpriller will be the chairperson for this fundraiser.  Lion Sam Gruenhagen advised that if the raffle is going to work, it must be done every week.  Also, thirty tickets must be sold before you can spin the wheel.  This fundraiser is a volunteer position.

Lion Jim Barbre, our founding Lion, is undergoing some health issues.  Please keep Lion Jim in our prayers.

We received a thank you from DG Gary Johnson and his wife Marlene for our hospitality and gifts at our Governor’s Night.

There will be no Super Bowl party or a radar run this year due to lack of interest.

GOVERNOR’S NIGHT/CHRISTMAS PARTY
Approximately thirty people attended the Governor’s Night/Christmas Party on December 5th.  A good time was had by all. DG Gary Johnson and his wife, Marlene along with VDG Kevin Schuldt and his wife Jean were in attendance. Santa Claus also made a “surprise” visit to our party. He handed out goodies to all that attended.

MELVIN JONES AWARD WINNERS
The highlight of the evening (besides Santa Claus) was the awarding of two Melvin Jones Awards to two members of our club.

DG Gary Johnson awarded the first Melvin Jones Award to Lion LaNette Thorson.  Lion LaNette has been a member of our club since August 1997 (Her husband Lion Terry Thorson sponsored her).  She has served as our club’s secretary since July 1998.  She is very well organized.  She takes the minutes of every meeting, types them up, sends the required reports on time, issues membership cards, and other numerous duties to numerous to mention.  In fact, the M & A’s that she turns in each month are so well done that they are used as a model for the Spring School of Instruction held every year. She also works at most functions that the Howard Lake Lions are involved in. Without her, the club would not run very efficiently.  CONGRATULATIONS LION LANETTE!

VDG Kevin Schuldt awarded the second Melvin Jones Award to Lion Duane Hass.  Lion Duane has been a member of our Lions club since February 1995 (His sister Lion Denise Oberpriller sponsored him.).  He is currently the Tail-Twister (for the second time), 3rd Vice-President, and is on the Gambling Committee.  He has served as 1st Vice-President (1998-99), President (1999-2000), Past President (2000-01 & 2001-02), and has served on the Membership Committee. He is currently chairman of the Easter Egg Hunt that is held every spring.  He has also helped out at almost every function and fundraiser that the Howard Lake Lions are involved in.  As you can tell, Lion Duane is a very active member of the Howard Lake Lions in all aspects.  CONGRATULATIONS LION DUANE!

MEETINGS
At the Dec. 19th meeting, it was decided that we have only one meeting in January, which would be on Jan. 9th.   The reason was that the first meeting would have taken place the day after New Year’s and the second meeting would have taken place the night before the MidWinter Convention.  There will be a Board of Directors meeting at 6:30 P.M.  At 7:00 P.M., there will be a meal cook and served by Lions Darrell and Mike Main.  Following the meal, there will be a regular business meeting.  Hope to see all you there!

5M-7 GRAM UPDATE
The next workday for the 5M-7 Gram has been set for Monday, December 30th at the Howard Lake Legion. Work will begin at approximately 6:30 P.M. (If the newsletters and labels are done by that time). Any Lion members interested in helping Lion Steve (5M-7 Gram Editor) with the newsletters should be at the Legion at that time.
